Holy smokes, Nintendo finally adds Bluetooth to the Nintendo Switch
As queer icons Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey once said: “there can be miracles if you believe.” And well, a miracle did indeed just happen, because Nintendo have only gone and (finally) added Bluetooth to the Nintendo Switch.
The announcement from Nintendo came early this morning and we, for one, didn’t see coming. While we love the Nintendo Switch, customization and features like Bluetooth have not been added to the console for a very long time, despite fans repeatedly asking for crumbs from the global publisher. And well, there hasn’t been anything confirmed on the customization front, but at least players will finally be able to play the Nintendo Switch with Bluetooth headphones on.
Players didn’t necessarily have a problem with using Bluetooth with their console before – if they had a transmitter that was compatible, that is. However, with this new change, the Nintendo Switch actually supports Bluetooth natively, a huge win for players out there (like us) who don’t want to get fiddly with transmitters and other wires, and just want an easy solution to our Bluetooth problem.
There have also been other technological devices from various developers that have been made specifically to work around the console’s limits. What this means for them going forward we can only speculate about.
However, as joyous as it is that you won’t need to fumble with wires while listening to your gameplay from wired headphones, there are limitations with Bluetooth on the Switch. In a post that provides support for players, it is stated that “Bluetooth audio will be disconnected during local communication, such as when starting a local wireless multiplayer game.”
Other restrictions involves the Nintendo Switch’s joy-cons. If more than two joy-cons are connected to the Switch while you’re using Bluetooth, you won’t be able to connect any other joy-cons without first removing the Bluetooth connection.
All in all, these restrictions seem a little frustrating but a small price to pay for the opportunity to lie in bed with wireless headphones on.
