Can you be gay in Mail Time?

Mail Time, from developer Kela van der Deijl (appelmoes games) and publisher Freedom Games, is a “cottagecore adventure game about delivering mail to forest animals.” In it, you play as a rookie mail scout who is working to earn all the badges needed to become a full-fledged scout. To do this, you need to deliver letters and packages to the residents of Grumblewood Grove, along with listening to them and helping them out with side quests.

This game is unquestionably cute and cozy, but as always, the question remains: can you be gay?

Can you be gay in Mail Time?

Mail Time doesn’t have any romantic storylines for the main player character. That said, you can customize your mail scout with a system that has 44 million potential customization variations. You can choose everything from your character’s skin color to the style of backpack they wear. This customization system also includes choosing which pronouns your scout uses, from the options of “she/her,” “he/him,” or “they/them.” The residents of Grumblewood Grove also have diverse pronouns, with some using “he/they” or “she/they” combinations.

Even though the player character doesn’t have any romance options, that doesn’t mean the other characters they meet don’t. One of the main side quests in Mail Time features a queer romance arc, though we won’t elaborate on it further to avoid spoilers.

Mail Time is now available to play on Mac and PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam, and will have Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4/5 console ports coming sometime this summer.
