The Gayming Podcast Episode 5: the one about the 2020 games we’re excited about and Pokemon drag queens!
The Gayming Podcast Episode 5 has just dropped. It’s the first episode of 2020 and already our minds are in the gutter!
In the studio, I was joined by freelance writer Matt Kamen and game developer and co-organiser of the Rainbow Game Jam, Kirsty Fraser.
What’s In Your Slot?
In this opening section of our podcast, we talked about what we’ve been playing recently.
I talked about how much fun Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is if you’re a Star Wars fan, especially with the soundtrack making you feel like you’re living in a Star Wars film! Matt talked about playing some VR games, and we discussed how playing VR is still very much a gimmick and with cables attached, you’re not fully immersed. Kirsty told us how she’d asked for Twitter recommendations on what to play and as a result has been playing Sayonara Wild Hearts, she loved how beautiful and amazing it was. We did too, check out Ed’s review here.
Gayming News
Further into the episode, we talked about what we’ve been reading on Gayming Magazine recently. Matt spoke about Aimee’s new year’s resolution piece on playing the games we want to play in 2020, not the games we feel we should play. This is a great lesson to everyone, not just in terms of gaming either, it applies to TV and Film as well. It will make you happier and the world less toxic too, which is always a win/win.
Kirsty spoke about our recent interview with the fabulous Ashly Burch, the voice of many strong queer women in video games. She loved how she portrays this positive representation of women in games.
I then spoke about our recent piece where Ed matched the queens of RuPaul’s DragCon UK with Pokémon! We all loved this piece and went through some of our personal favourites, plus we all love how low-key shady Ed is!
Hot Topic
As the first episode of 2020, we wanted to use the hot topic segment to look ahead to the games coming up this year that we are excited about. This was a great opportunity to list off some of our favourites including Cyberpunk 2077 and Animal Crossing. Although, this did lead us down a dark path to wondering how many glory holes the Mayor in Animal Crossing had in his office!
Moving on from that, we also talked about some more favourites including LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (yes, I spoke about a LEGO game, groundbreaking!). Matt tried to beat my LEGO game knowledge, but I won!
Kirsty is also looking forward to Tell Me Why from DONTNOD, the producers of the Life is Strange series. We all love how one of the main protagonists will be a trans character.
After listing some other favourites, we realised that no one said Overwatch 2, not sure what that says about us or the game itself! Also, no one mentioned the new Marvel Avengers game from Square Enix. Perhaps the Marvel bubble has finally burst?!
