7 nerdy LGBTQ+ musicians you should listen to!

Check out our list of seven LGBTQ+ musicians that make nerdy themed songs about our favorite fandoms, past and present!

Music is an integral part of our lives every day, whether you listen to what’s popular or what’s underground. We connect and relate to lyrics, experience a wide range of emotions from the instrumentals and vocals, and we also attach memories to our favorite songs too.

But where are the musicians who are a part of our community that also incorporate our shared love of nerdy topics and themes within their work? Lucky for you, I compiled a list below of just that!

Jakeneutron

Jakeneutron is a black multimedia animator and nerdcore artist from Central Florida, as well as the founder and director of his own animation studio called Team Neutron. Him and his team are behind several popular fan animated music videos, such as “Jax Toy” which is based off The Amazing Digital Circus, and “Don’t Listen” which is based off the indie game series Amanda the Adventurer.

Many of Team Neutron’s projects crossover into fandoms from all over, whether they’re cartoons, indie games, and more! The possibilities are truly endless with Jake and his team, so I’d highly recommend going over to his YouTube and social media to see if they’ve ever done a song that involves your favorite fandom. Spoiler: they most recently did a Deltarune fan song, and it’s amazing!

Toño

Toño is a rapper and drag king from Portland, Oregon that has referenced so many video games across several songs that it’s hard to keep up! Most recently, they dropped a song called “FNAF CYPHER” where he literally performs as 6 different characters from the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. Toño has a song called “Eleven (ft. hunterdrips)” that’s about, you guessed it: Stranger Things, the hit show that just ended a few weeks ago.

He also put out a song called “Dick Game” with his long time collaborator and friend Yuck! that references so many video games, and a song called “Wreck It Ralph (CUB/Drip Mix)” that references fighting games like Super Smash Bros and of course the animated film Wreck It Ralph too. Check out Toño’s social media to see their iconic drag looks, and give his his discography a listen while you’re at it too!

Boy Bowser

Coming in as aggressively confident as the Nintendo character he’s named after, Boy Bowser is a force to be reckoned with. Raised in La Puente, the SoCal artist combines clever, comedic wordplay with hard hitting topics that draw from their experiences as a trans person of color to create intense, energy-packed hip hop for their generation.

Boy Bowser put out a song called Johnny Test this past September that delivers heavy hitting bars that are both sexy and clever, referencing the character from the show in a slick and relatable way. The instrumental is also extremely catchy, I’m a bit obsessed with this song! He studied jazz and classical music for years, and brings that knowledge and history to their raps, with fast-paced and aggressively delivered lyrics that show a dedication to their craft.

Be sure to give Boy Bowser a follow on social media and check out their music, his songs will absolutely get stuck in your head!

CreepP

CreepP rose to viral fame early in their career through their iconic vocaloid songs and over the past few years has established themselves as a staple as a solo artist through a wide array of different songs and albums. They have recently worked with Ayesha Erotica as well as 6arelyhuman, and has made so many references to several different fandoms all across their discography. Honestly, all of their songs are bangers, but what about their nerdy references?

In their song Look at my Body they reference Mystique from X-Men, and their song Bop It not only references the toy the track is named after, but also the icon and legend Hatsune Miku. I’m a huge horror fan myself, so I love the references to The Exorcist in their song Bitch on the Internet, the references to Child’s Play on Fxxk U Up Like Chucky, as well as the references to Jigsaw from SAW in their song titled Bitch on the Internet.

Looking for some more niche references? Their song I’M SURROUNDED references Homestar Runner and their track REPENT MOTHERFUCKER references the anime Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. There’s many more references to other fandoms too, so give them a follow on social media and check out their discography too!
