Gravity Falls creator reveals hilarious censors received from Disney

Gravity Falls has quite the reputation for censors and censorship already, having had many of its scenes changed or straight up removed to satisfy the ever-powerful Disney Standards and Practices department for Disney’s TV shows.

However, in a new tweet from creator Alex Hirsch, celebrating 10 years of Gravity Falls, the lengths of what Disney TV S&P went with their censors have been revealed.

“One last treat. Ever curious about the fights I had with the censors on Gravity Falls? I probably shouldn’t share this buttttt here are some REAL NOTES from DISNEY S&P and my REAL REPLIES. You are not prepared.” Hirsch tweets, including a 4 and a half minutes video. The video, and tweet, can be seen below.

The video shows off all of the individual complaints that Disney S&P had with moments on certain pages. For example, one complaint mentioned was the use of the term “chub pup” on a T-Shirt. The complaint was over the word “chub” which S&P argued had a sexual connotation. While correct, the context behind the scene was that of a fat dog, which Hirsch argued meant that nobody would be able to get that from the context given.

However, the most derogatory censors asked of Hirsch are about the relationship between two cop characters from Gravity Falls – Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland. These two characters have been implied to be in love and in a romantic relationship with one another throughout the entirety of the show, but it was only until the end did that relationship get confirmed.

The censors in question is about a scene where Sheriff Blubs put his arm around Deputy Durland. Disney’s S&P department notes to Hirsch “Please revise […] As noted in previous concerns, their affectionate relationship should remain comical versus flirtatious.”

“Nope. They’re…buddies. Chill out.” Hirsch replies. The S&P department ends up approving the scene.

Considering the accusations that Disney has had levied at them in regards to LGBTQ+ content being censored or straight up removed, it certainly isn’t hard to believe that Disney’s standards against same-sex affection were downright medieval.

Thankfully, if the same-sex kiss featured in Lightyear (2022) is any indication, the company is looking to be more open-minded.

Gravity Falls is available to watch on Disney+.
