A new PS Plus subscription including Crunchyroll is a winning combination

The moment you reach adulthood is something that’s actually quite different for everyone, believe it or not. For some of us it’s that ‘eureka’ moment of getting a job, moving out of your parent’s house, and deciding to become your own person. For me, it was realizing that with my income I could pay rent and still afford both my PS Plus subscription, Spotify, and Crunchyroll at the same time. That’s actually a big deal for me, alright?

But consider this: a PS Plus subscription AND Crunchyroll but make it less expensive. Alright, you had my interest before but now you have my attention.

The PS Plus subscription has been a staple for the PlayStation for a while now and is very much like the Xbox Live Gold service that Microsoft does. For 1 month of PS Plus you pay £6.99, £19.99 for 3 months, and £49.99 for 12 months. This allows you to play online games with friends, and gets you a selection of new games to play each and every month. Not too bad!

As for Crunchyroll, you’re able to use the service for free. The downside of that however is the constant adverts you get and the fact you have to wait a little longer to get episodes. It makes sense considering it’s free, but once you go premium you never want to go back. The problem with Crunchyroll though is that… it’s a little expensive at £7.99 per month, or £79.99 per year. Combine both PS Plus and Crunchyroll and that’s knocking, hold up lemme use my fingers… That’s nearly £130 per year and yes, that may not sound too bad to some of you, but some of us have got family to feed, tax to pay and that’s not even including rent! It’s a lot, and with every entertainment service asking so much of your time now to try and get you into the next big thing… You’ve got to pick and choose wisely.

Why yes, I think I’ll add anime to my backlog of things I need to consume before I die

That’s why if the rumours are indeed true and that PS Plus will eventually get a more expensive subscription service, but will include Crunchyroll with it, I’ll be a very happy theydy. Crunchyroll offers ease of access that’s hard to pass up, and with them and Funimation getting closer in a merger that’ll change how we watch anime… Sony would only be making very good business decisions to add that to a PS Plus subscription.

In a statement about Crunchyroll and Funimation merging, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment stated “with the addition of Crunchyroll, we have an unprecedented opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver the anime experience across any platform they choose, from theatrical, events, home entertainment, games, streaming, linear TV — everywhere and every way fans want to experience their anime.” He continued, “our goal is to create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.”

Perhaps, to put on my tinfoil hat for a moment, this unified anime subscription experience wouldn’t even be just Crunchyroll and Funimation added to a PS Plus subscription, but something that combines both anime, games and even anime games together in an impactful way. It’d be pretty neat to grab the latest Tales game from the same place as you watch Boruto, now wouldn’t it?

Until we find out more, all we can do is speculate and hope that this acquisition will lead to more entertainment for everyone.
