Apex Legends Season 9 is looking queer AF
It’s only been a few days, but I’m actively enjoying a lot of what Apex Legends is putting down. You’ve got confirmed lesbian Valkyrie, voiced by the talented Erika Ishii, a new Arena mode that’s already wormed its way to being a favourite of ours, and with the new comic and voice lines, this season looks is looking to be super queer. Possibly the queerest season since the reveal of Fuse from Season 8.
While the reveal of Valkyrie being a flirty lesbian does butter our biscuit somewhat, it isn’t enough for us to say that this makes Season 9 of Apex Legends super queer. Not at all.
But when you combine Valkyrie being a flirty lesbian, Loba and Bangalore’s ‘will they / won’t they’ relationship, the flirty voice lines between Valkyrie and Loba, and just some general, but heartwarming queer friendship of Bloodhound and Fuse… Well, that’s pretty damn gay!
Without spoiling too much of the Season 9 comic which unfortunately got leaked, Loba and Bangalore’s relationship with one another is something that shifts from ‘just friendship’ to something entirely different. Throughout the comic, the number one thing that are on each other’s mind is, in fact, each other. Valkyrie, as to be expected, also shows up and it’s clear that she’s got her eyes on the very hot women around her – particularly Loba. The two of them have a similar past, and as such they are drawn together by that similarity.
With that, we won’t say anything more in regards to the comics apart from there may be a queer love triangle occurring in Apex Legends future. And if that interests you, then consider this your warning from us to get excited. We have a big feeling it’ll be coming to a head either in Season 10 or maybe even in the upcoming comic that’s set to release in June.
One thing that we can confirm that makes this season pretty damn queer however, is that Loba and Valkyrie definitely have some sort of flirty nature to their relationship. Both of them are attracted to women, and while Loba is flirty with most of the Legends outside of Revenant, there seems to be some serious sexual tension between her and Valkyrie.
Valkyrie often states that ‘this is the kiss of life’ she needed whenever Loba revives her, and often asks if the loot that Loba gives her is out of her ‘private collection’ in the same tone that any experienced lesbian would when trying to get the ‘feel’ of someone. Loba gives as good as she gets, of course, stating that Valkyrie is her knight in shining armour. Honestly, it’s a bit embarrassing. Get a room, you two. And trust us, we’re not over-selling their conversations with one another, have a listen yourself and prepare to sweat.
And then there’s Fuse and Bloodhound. Fuse and Bloodhound are both very in-touch with one another’s thoughts and feelings, with the latter being both complimentary and caring for Fuse even with the drama that happened in Season 8.
Now, before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, this doesn’t necessarily mean we’re wanting Fuse and Bloodhound to get together, though we won’t say no either, but we appreciate the queer characters of Apex Legends sticking together. It feels a lot more like real life. That’s not to say queer people don’t have straight friends, but the kinship and safety of being with someone who not only accepts you, but who embraces and understands you is paramount. Intentional or not, we’re here for the Fuse and Bloodhound bonding.
When you combine a possible love triangle, a queer relationship, and intimacy of the Legends in this season, it’s hard to deny that this season is the queerest yet. Considering the large cast of LGBTQIA characters in Apex Legends maybe we shouldn’t be all that surprised, but considering that this is a battle royale game that still manages to create an interesting story with in-game comics in a way other games just haven’t done, we’ll give credit where it’s due.
Frankly, we’re also stoked to see queer representation that isn’t just white, muscular men and women. While there have been some serious blunders in how some of the characters have been represented by Respawn, queer diversity isn’t one of them. Such care about their queer audience is just another reason that makes Apex Legends and its colourful cast of characters a joy to both read about and play.
