Our Flag Means Death Season 3 is no more

If you’re like us and were looking forward to Season 3 of the joyful queer pirate show known as Our Flag Means Death… Then we’ve got some bad news.

Confirmed by the creator of the show, David Jenkins, the cancellation of Our Flag Means Death (starring names like Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby) has left fans speculating what could have happened in Season 3 after the shocker of an ending in its previous season.

It’s also given way to fans already planning different ways to get the show renewed, as to be expected from LGBTQ+ folks whose means of seeing themselves represented on their TV screens seems to continue to dwindle.

But what’s more shocking that once again another queer TV series has been axed, is that it happened to Our Flag Means Death. While it’s premier in 2022 was a somewhat quiet, but successful, slowburn, Season 2 of the series managed to outpace even some of HBO Max’s staple series.

To say it was popular was an understatement, and that’s not even addressing the vast amount of queer fandom that it gained throughout the years. Seriously, the fanfiction side pulled in nearly 30,000 stories alone, and the fan-art? Well, let’s not even go there. Suffice to say, Our Flag Means Death was popular enough that a Season 3 seemed guaranteed.

Addressing the cancellation in an Instagram post, Jenkins stated the following:

“Welp, I’ve got good news and bad.

The good news? We’ve spent two seasons in a bizarre, beautifully-rendered world populated by some of the greatest actors and creatives working. And the second season was made possible by the enthusiasm of one of the most likable fan communities in the history of this medium. Your voices made a difference, your art made a difference, your viewership made a difference in securing more OUR FLAG. Getting to share this show with you and watching you make it yours has been a dream come true.

The bad news is clear. OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season. We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee, and David Ruby have been incredible champions of this show. They allowed us to make something authentically weird and heartfelt, cheering us on the entire way.

I’m very sad I won’t set foot on the Revenge again with my friends, some of whom have become close to family. But I couldn’t be more grateful for being allowed to captain the damn thing in the first place.

Our Flag Means Us. Loving one another, pulling off some pretty weird and beautiful shit, and talking it through… as a crew.”

Thankfully, there’s another queer pirate TV show out there called Black Sails, but considering its grittier tone and comparisons to another HBO series, Game of Thrones, it perhaps might not be the dock fans are looking for.

Even so, as fans of both piracy, and great, queer TV, we’re gutted that Our Flag Means Death won’t be getting the send-off we imagined for it.

But hey, at least we’ll always have fond memories.
