The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey knows their ‘gay army’ has their back
HBO’s The Last of Us has nearly finished its first season (with a season 2 already confirmed to be on the way in the future) to near universal acclaim from critics and fans alike. For gay fans of the video game, the series has truly allowed us to have our cake and eat it with phenomenal performances from Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Storm Reid as Riley, Nick Offerman as Bill, and Murray Bartlett as Frank.
Of course, while each episode has excelled it hasn’t gone unnoticed that episodes focusing on queer narratives or characters have been rated considerably lower by fans.
Even with some very loud bigots voicing their displeasure, that hasn’t stopped the cast from speaking out against hatred, with both Reid and Ramsey stating that if you didn’t like what you were seeing with HBO’s The Last of Us, what you should do is pretty simple. “Don’t like, don’t watch.”
Nevertheless, it hasn’t all been negativity for the cast. Speaking on Comicbook.com’s The Last of Pods podcast, Bella Ramsey spoke out about fan reaction – both the good and the bad.
“I’m very aware that there’s a gay army on Twitter who are supporting me and Ellie.” Ramsey said. “It’s like they’re so much louder than any people who still hate it, or hate the show, the homophobic trolls.”
Ramsey clarified that it felt nicer to have a gay army supporting them and their role as Ellie on The Last of Us. “That’s been a reaction that I’ve really enjoyed.”
