Horror dungeon crawler They Speak From The Abyss gets a new demo

On Monday, queer solo developer Nikki Kalpa announced that their upcoming horror dungeon crawler They Speak From The Abyss has a new playable demo available ahead of its 2023 release.

Described as having a “glorious grunge horror aesthetic inspired by the masterful creations of Clive Barker and Junji Ito,” They Speak From The Abyss is a psychological horror RPG that embraces classic dungeon crawling mechanics. The game follows Vanessa Rivera, a young woman in dire need of a new start. She is sent to a world of literal nightmares stalked by abominations and monsters called The Abyss thanks to a conduit formed by dread and anguish. In order to escape this realm, Vanessa has to face the very demons she was trying to escape from in the first place (and also solve puzzles).

The entire game is done in a grotesque pixel art style that adds to the horror of this journey. Vanessa explores gruesome environments to confront the other lost souls and terrifying demons that inhabit The Abyss. Some of these demons can be reasoned with, but not all are so amenable. In those cases, players will take part in “heart pounding active-time battles.”

They Speak From The Abyss is about overcoming fears and trauma, and trying to become a stronger person,” Kalpa said. “Players must explore and confront many personal, mature, and often dark themes; themes of body horror and psychological struggle emerged through an expression of hate and anger. The journey of the player is designed to reflect real-world trials and tribulations.”

The first demo for this game was available in the Haunted PS1 Demo Disc: Spectral Mall. A new demo will be dropping on the game’s recently launched Kickstarter campaign in the next week or so. It joins the likes of TOUCHSTARVED in the ranks of upcoming, queer, indie horror games.
