Old Baldur’s Gate 3 saves won’t work with new patch
We’re sorry Baldur’s Gate 3 fans, but it looks as though you’ll have to say goodbye to your old saves files sooner than you expected!
We all knew that we wouldn’t be able to access our old Baldur’s Gate saves when the development of Larian’s newest masterpiece came to a close, but we didn’t think that we’d be at risk of having incompatible saves only a few months after the release of Early Access.
The reason for why the new saves won’t be compatible wasn’t disclosed in Larian Studio’s newest post, but if we had to guess? It might have something to do with adding new content like companions, or even races and classes. But again, this is only speculation.
For those of you who’d rather keep playing on your old saves, then fret not! Larian Studios is well aware of that, and have set out a way that you can bypass the new patch and still play on your old saves through the secondary branch of the game. This is different from the primary branch, which will update the game with the newest version of Baldur’s Gate 3.
To access the secondary branch, do the following:
- Right click on the game in your Steam library
- Select properties
- Click the BETAS tab
- In the list under “Select the beta you would like to opt in to“, select patch2
- Close the properties menu
You’re able to move to the secondary branch now in preparation for the new patch. Otherwise, if you’re fine with just playing the new and upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 patch, then just leave your game as it is.
If you’re still struggling to decide what you want to do, why don’t you pass the time by checking out our review of the game? We promise it isn’t just another love letter about Lae’zel.
