Archetype Entertainment adds Bioware vets to the mix to make a new sci-fi RPG
Wizards of the Coast may be mostly well-known by those who love their Dungeons and Dragons, but recently they’ve been making a big comeback in the world of video games. This time they’ve made the news thanks to their new studio, Archetype Entertainment.
Archetype Entertainment already has quite the reputation thanks to being another division of Wizards of the Coast, but with BioWare veterans like James Ohlen, Chad Robertson and even Drew Karpyshyn, it’s hard for your expectations not to rise.
Ohlen is the head of Archetype Entertainment, having served as a lead designer and creative director back when he worked at BioWare. He worked on games such as Neverwinter Nights, Baldurs Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and a whole lot more.
Robertson however served as BioWare Austin’s studio director, as well as head of technology. According to Polygon, he’ll be Archetype Entertainment’s vice president and studio general manager.
As for Karpyshyn, is there anyone who hasn’t heard of his name? Karpshyn is well known for his video game novels such as Star Wars’ Darth Bane series, as well as Mass Effect’s Revelation, Ascension, and Retribution. To have him on board can only mean good things.
The announcement of the studio came from their official Twitter page, which also announced their website. On it, we learned more about the goals of the studio.
“Archetype Entertainment is a game development studio in Austin, Texas led by industry veterans from BioWare and other AAA studios. Founded in 2019, Archetype is an autonomous division of Wizards of the Coast. We are assembling a world-class team to build a multi-platform roleplaying game set in a new science fiction universe.
At Archetype, we believe there will always be a place for story-driven roleplaying games that put the player at the center of an epic personal narrative with impactful choices. We are building games that represent the diversity of our audience. We also believe that game studios should empower top developers and challenge them with ambitious projects that are shaped by a strong, clearly communicated creative vision.”
Exciting? That’s the understatement of the century.
