Gayming Awards 2025 Community Impact Award – Stream for a Cause winner’s interview

Stream for a Cause took home the win at this year’s Gayming Awards 2025 in the new Community Impact Award category for their work in supporting and uplifting LGBTQ gamers in 2024.

Stream for a Cause is a non-profit organization who works to connect streamers with small nonprofits and to make sure that the money raised through charity streams is as impactful as possible.

After they received their Award, it was my delight to be able to sit down with their Exec Director, Robbie Miller, to talk more about their win and their work.

Robin: Robbie, congratulations on your Community Impact Award! It’s the first year of this new category, how do you feel?

Robbie: I was so honored just to be nominated, but winning was something I never saw coming! There were so many organizations nominated alongside us that absolutely deserved the recognition, and we were humbled to be the first recipient.

This is actually the first award SfaC has ever won, because we believe in really being the support that uplifts communities rather than the focal point. I can honestly say it felt like a very special and emotional moment to me that I won’t forget.

Take us back, what was the catalyst for starting Stream for a Cause?

Honestly? There are so many larger organizations out there that streamers gravitate towards working with. If you name a cause you are passionate about, you can also probably name the “name brand” charity that champions it. But what about all the places out there that are doing the boots on the ground work to keep our communities up and running? They are vital and were not really being brought to the table in content creation space. We wanted to change that make sure that as the world got more global, we weren’t forgetting about local.

Tell us about SFAC’s work, what does the organization do and what programs are you currently running.

Stream for a Cause is really designed to help uplift underserved communities. The best way to do that is to partner and support the organizations that call them home. These local organizations are experts on their communities and the people they serve. Our job is to help them continue their work. Through our grant making program we can provide financial resources, and with our coaching program we can give those communities the tools they need to be sustainable.

We like to support our own communities too. Our streamer support fund ensures streamers are able to keep doing what they do without paying out of pocket for charity streams and supplies, something larger charities really expect them to do and has been normalized. We also provide important mental health resources through Pixel Care too, thanks to our partners at The Center for Suicide Awareness.

What have been some of the highlights of your work so far?

I think there are two big ones that come to mind. First, I feel a really special connection to the nonprofits we work with. After almost 100 grants given, I have developed friendships and mentorship with so many of their leaders. I can still name almost every organization, their leader, and what the did with the help of our creators. They really have left a mark on my heart that uplifts me when things are tough.

Secondly though was the first meet up we ever hosted, our Twitch Con Second Chance Prom. I was so nervous nobody would come. It was such a risk for me to put SfaC out there like that, but seeing so many folks show up and dress up and have fun made me feel like we didn’t just create a charity, but we had built a community that really meant something to people.

How has SFAC changed over the years and what were some of the key turning points that really made you feel like you levelled up?

I think we have really worked to remain agile. Our community organizations have unique needs that change all the time, and it is our job to be good listeners and help where we can. Originally we started with just grant making, but we saw a need for more than just funds but mentorship. As the political climate changes around the globe, we are seeing funding cut for so many crucial programs and we are able to fulfil that need now too as best we can. We have for sure had turning points as far as milestones we have hit as well as through building trust with folks about the work SfaC does, but staying focused on our mission and flexible with the needs of the folks we serve means we have definitely been leveling up.

Tell us more about your Ambassador program and what does it mean to the organization to have such creative streamers on your side?

When we developed our ambassador program, we didn’t want just one more program that was a spotlight on products, games, brands and little else. Our ambassadors bring such a crucial perspective to guiding the work of Stream for a Cause. We meet once a month, talk about upcoming events and take their ideas to heart. It’s been such an important step in our organization to have an outlet of exceptionally dedicated streamers to make sure that SfaC is as streamer friendly as it possibly can be.

The creativity of our streamers truly always blows us away. From 160 hour plus marathon streams, to tournaments, raid trains, and more; we believe our creators are some of the best. They bring such creativity and excitement to the space that we are always here to uplift and support their ambitions and desire to make a difference.

What’s next for SFAC? Any highlights coming up?

Absolutely! We have a few big things coming up that I think will be awesome! First, we are hosting the second ever PAX West Drag Show coming up in August. After that we have our Prom event again, and finally our Scream for a Cause Halloween event. We are aiming to have our biggest year yet, so if you see us at any events come say hi!

Last question, how do people donate to support you?

Folks can for sure make a donation through our website, but the more fun way to donate is through a charity stream. The live reactions to a donation really light up the creator hosting a stream, and sometimes there are even cool incentives to go along with everything too. If you follow our socials or jump in our Discord, you can always keep up on where to see our streamers doing charity events!
