The best Baldur’s Gate 3 meme just became canon
If you’ve been paying attention to Baldur’s Gate 3 since its official release in August, you’ll know by now that the community’s meme game is out of this world. From Karlach going to build a bear to Gale sucking on your boots like its a delicious lollipop, fans have taken these characters and provided them with some excellent and entertaining memes.
Most people would be content with just having these memes outside of the game itself, but Patch 5 of Baldur’s Gate 3 has gone a step further with a particular dialogue branch you can unlock with Shadowheart during the game’s epilogue.
Thanks to YouTuber Kazuliski, and several datamines floating around on Baldur’s Gate 3’s Reddit communities, we now know that the best Shadowheart meme of all time is now featured in the game itself.
For those unaware of the joke, let us give a detailed explanation. Many moons ago (August 17th, to be exact), Twitter user cannibalanders posted an image of Shadowheart with a quote from Tumblr. It read: “Yes, I’m a gatekeeper and a hater. I’m also God’s favourite princess and the most interesting girl in the world.” Jennifer English, Shadowheart’s actor, reread the quote, and it was shared on Twitter by Aliona Baranova, actor, Mocap Performance Director for Baldur’s Gate 3, and English’s partner. It quickly went viral and became something English leaned into.
And now it’s not just a meme but an actual canon quote that the player character can find.
The caveat is this: you must play as a certain race to unlock the option. As far as we know, the only race able to is Githyanki, which is pretty ironic considering Shadowheart’s hater tendencies towards Lae’zel, the squad’s Githyanki companion.
This wasn’t the only memey content involved in Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 5, but it’s certainly one of the more memorable instances. Well, that and Bing Bong.
