The L Word: Generation Q cancelled by Showtime

Variety has reported that Showtime has cancelled The L Word: Generation Q, though a new reboot of the original series is reportedly in the works. The L Word: Generation Q ran for three seasons before its cancellation.

Generation Q is set 10 years after the original series, and follows a new set of LGBTQ+ friends in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. The show follows them through the trials and tribulations of life in LA, with characters from the original series, like Shane (Kate Moennig) – who now owns a gay bar named after their deceased friend Dana, Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey), and Bette (Jennifer Beals), returning to reprise their original roles. It also starred other cast members Arienne Mandi, Sepideh Moafi, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, Jordan Hull and Jamie Clayton.

Unfortunately, this is yet another show led by queer women that has been cancelled by a streaming service. Other casualties of this trend include Paper Girls, Gentleman Jack, First Kill, The Wilds, and Warrior Nun, across multiple streaming platforms. These shows haven’t been under-performing; First Kill cracked Netflix’s Top 10 within three days of its debut, and The Wilds has had a whole social media campaign and petition organized to save it from cancellation, which cites it in the 94.7 percentile of Amazon Video dramas. Rather, it seems like a combination of the instability of the streaming landscape and companies’ reluctance to bet on women/LGBTQ+/BIPOC-led shows.

At least this cancellation will not mark the end of The L Word IP on modern TV, as a reboot of the original show is in the works. That said, we don’t have many details beyond that about the show, like a release date or even window, or information about how the cast will be handled.
