Update adds profanity filter to The Sims 4 gallery
On Tuesday, Maxis announced a new update to The Sims 4 in a short blog post that adds a profanity filter to the in-game gallery. According to Maxis, this is to prevent “wholly unacceptable” content from being on display there.
“We are aware of and have seen some select instances of wholly unacceptable content that has been uploaded to The Sims 4 Gallery,” the blog post said. “Our team has reviewed, and made critical updates to, the profanity filter to help prevent this from happening again in the future.”
“We are grateful for the community’s vigilance in helping us identify these inappropriate uploads so we can maintain a safe, creative environment for our players. We will continue to do our part by quickly taking down objectionable content that surfaces, identifying and removing repeat offenders and regularly reviewing the profanity filter in case any updates need to be made.
We encourage players to continue to use the ‘Flag This’ button on The Gallery to report any offensive uploads or comments.”
The blog post does not go into detail about what kind of content the updated filter will be removing. The gallery in The Sims 4 is a space where players can upload their own builds, Sims families, lots, and more for others to see and play with, so it’s probably not a stretch to assume the filter will be targeting not-safe-for-work or sexually explicit content, along with bigoted or offensive content, as the “wholly unacceptable content.”
This seems to be another step Maxis is taking alongside its pronouns update and the addition of sexual and romantic attraction to make The Sims 4 a safe and inclusive space for people of all ages. Hopefully the developers will release more concrete information about the filter and what it’s removing from the in-game gallery soon.
