Evil Geniuses win Astral Clash in organization debut
The Gen.G Astral Clash women and marginalized genders Valorant LAN tournament ended on Sunday, and the new Evil Geniuses roster – formerly signed to Dignitas – took home the trophy with a 2-0 victory over Misfits Black.
Astral Clash is a tournament Gen.G put on in collaboration with Galorants, the largest Valorant community of female-identifying and nonbinary gamers, and sponsored by Tampax and Always. The goal of the event was to “break down gendered stigmas” in the esports community and give women and nonbinary folks more opportunities to compete.
Eight teams participated in Astral Clash; four fought their way into the tournament through two qualifiers, while the other four were professional signed teams that were invited to participate. The participating teams were: Evil Geniuses, Gen.G Black, Misfits Black, Shopify Rebellion, Dart Monkeys, TSM FTX X, Immortals, and Native Gaming White.
This tournament was Evil Geniuses’ debut under their new organization’s banner, as they have been competing in VCT Game Changers and other Valorant tournaments with Dignitas up to this point. The roster has seen good, but not great results in Game Changers, consistently taking the third to fourth place slots behind the scene’s giants in Cloud9 White and Shopify Rebellion. With this win, EG were able to bring home a trophy to their new org at their first event, and further cemented their reputation as “LANimals” (players who excel when playing in person, rather than online).
Astral Clash was also notable for Gen.G Black as a team, since it was Lx’s (formerly known as LynnNyaa) last event with the roster. Lx had been competing within the Game Changers ecosystem with Gen.G Black since the scene’s inception, but has now decided to make the switch over to playing Counter Strike: GO in the ESL Impact circuit.
