Tom Hardy weighs in on Venom being an LGBT+ icon
It was late September that Andy Serkis, Director of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, let it slip that the symbiote – aka Venom – would have a ‘coming out‘ scene in the newest film. Considering the symbiote’s status as an LGBT+ icon, it wasn’t that much of a surprise for fans of Venom and Eddie Brock.
However now Tom Hardy, the lead actor, has also decided to weigh in on the symbiote’s status as an icon for the queer community.
In an interview with MTV, both Hardy and Serkis answered questions about the film. Hardy’s response to the question about Venom being an LGBT+ icon was eye-opening and, as expected from Hardy, quite open-minded.
“We filled and flowed with whatever aspect that anybody thought was enjoyable of the first and try to roll it into the second,” Hardy told MTV critic and writer, Hannah Flint. “Because ultimately it’s about entertaining people and giving people some joy and having something to celebrate and go out and be entertained by it.”
Hardy also acknowledged that they had a lot of different feedback from people thanks to the first film, which became popular among queer fans due to the symbiote’s possessive, yet protective nature that grew over time during its interactions with Eddie.

We’ll find out whether Venom: Let There Be Carnage brings an actual queer, genuine love story between Eddie and Venom – with a coming out scene to boot – when it releases this October 15th.
