Rainbow Game Jam 2021 starts today
If you’re a queer creator who often wonders what it’d be like to sit down and create a video game, then wonder no more! Because Rainbow Game Jam 2021 is here, and if you’re looking for a sign to start your game development journey, then this is it!
Rainbow Game Jam is an event created by Kirsty Fraser and Steven Taarland where, in the space of just two weeks, queer creatives come together to make some very gay games. I personally love events like this, as it inspires people from all walks of life to create something truly special and, as far as I’m concerned, the more gay games in the world the better!
“Rainbow Game Jam encourages participants to create games exploring and celebrating identity, gender, sexuality, sex, life, Intersectionality, being queer, yourself and your community, pride, protests, and love!” Reads the statement from the jam’s official page. “Games are for everyone, and anyone can create games!”
Last year the Rainbow Game Jam received 39 entries, ranging from queer puzzle games to small RPGs that you can play on your browser – will the 2021 event match up to it? Let’s hope so, and let’s hope this year there’s even more entries. Because let’s be honest, the creativity of queer creators within the video game industry cannot be understated: just look at how many awesome, new creations appear on itch.io every day.
To get started you first need to know the theme of the jam, which is ‘Liberation’ for this year. After musing on that you can get stuck right in, or if you’re new to the whole thing you could also pop into the official discord of the event and see if there’s anyone looking to do a collaboration. It doesn’t matter what your skillset, I’m certain that two heads are almost always better than one.
The Rainbow Game Jam 2021 starts now, so don’t second guess yourself: get stuck right in and make a queer game that’ll blow everyone’s socks off!
