Home Sweet Home: Survive blends Thai horror with thrilling gameplay

It’s no secret that, in some way or other, a large group of the LGBT+ community is drawn to horror. Whether it be because we’re all secretly lusting for the killer that stalks us down, or we’re enraptured by the queer subtext, we love what horror entails. So it’s no surprise that Home Sweet Home: Survive has been met with mostly positive feedback.

Developed by Yggdrazil Group and currently in early access, Home Sweet Home: Survive is an asymmetrical horror game that pits 1 specter against 4 survivors. The survivors have got lost in a ‘Hindrance’ – a dimension between the world of the living and the dead – and must perform prayer rituals in order to escape. That or they can just beat the ever-loving crap out of the specter.

If it sounds similar to Dead by Daylight, it’s because it is and, considering how well Dead by Daylight is doing right now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Unlike Dead by Daylight though, this game is very keen to lean back on what it does best: Thai horror. It makes sense, Yggdrazil Group is based in Bangkok and has an all-Thai development team, so there’s no real fear that the specters and survivors included in the game will be grossly misrepresented. The leaning in on Thai folklore and myth also just adds a lot of character to the game too, particularly with the rituals that can be performed to escape from the Hindrances.

It’s a game that has largely surprised us with how fun it is, despite it still being early access. It is, of course, rather clunky and there certainly needs to be some major improvements added but all in all, Home Sweet Home: Survive is a game that we can see becoming a major competitor for Dead by Daylight in the future.

You can grab Home Sweet Home: Survive on Steam.
