Sword of the Necromancer, a Roguelike Game With a Queer Protagonist, Is Out Now

How far would you go to save the one you love? That’s the question asked in Sword of the Necromancer – a roguelike game with a queer protagonist, a bandit turned bodyguard named Tama.

After a pilgrimage that goes wrong leaves her friend Koko dead, Tama chooses to defy all and head into the tomb of the Necromancer in order to find his sword and bring Koko back. Only, as our review of the game states, the true power lies in the Necromancer himself. Without defeating him, Koko will remain dead.

This leaves players no choice but to get stuck right into dungeon crawling, with each dungeon more unique than the next. Some will have spike traps, others electricity, and then there are enemies that can cause status effects to slowly wilt your health down, such as with poison or fire.

But don’t fret, while the Sword of the Necromancer isn’t enough to revive Koko – it can revive monsters to work as your allies. Nothing is scarier than reviving three Impeachers – goblin-like creatures that can shoot arrows from afar – to lay down the law against your enemies.

There’s also a queer romance story for players to look forward to in Sword of the Necromancer, with each dungeon cleared offering up a new slice of past memories between Tama and Koko. If you like your love stories to not just be visual novels with very little else to do, then this game will delight you.

Sword of the Necromancer can be found on Steam, Xbox One, Xbox S/X, PS5, PS4, and the Nintendo Switch. It currently has 10% off its price on Steam, so if you’re interested in playing, go and show your support!
