HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 actress teases addition of ‘future superstar’ to cast

In an interview with Deadline published on February 12, Isabela Merced — who will play Deena in HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 — spoke a little about shooting this new season and teased that someone very special has been added to the cast.

“The stars are truly aligning,” Merced told Deadline. “I had several of my friends that I’ve worked with in this industry for a long time join the cast. I can’t say who just joined. But he’s amazing. And he’s a future superstar and already a superstar in my eyes.”

Merced also praised her co-star Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart) who is playing Abby in The Last of Us Season 2, saying that she is “one of the most talented actors I’ve ever worked with.”

“And Craig Mazin is one of the most brilliant people, actually, I think, a genius. I’m sure if they did the test, they would find out that it’s true. And he’s just has a way of bringing these characters to life that no one could ever just come up with in such a short amount of time. I love him. He’s amazing.”

As for Merced, she’s fairly well-versed in the source material of the show herself, and seems to feel confident in her portrayal of Deena so far.

“We’ve had one day of shooting for me as Deena and I gotta say, we kind of ate, I’m not gonna lie,” she told Deadline. “I was a huge fan of the second game. I played it in, like one weekend. And then I wondered, how is this going to translate onto TV.”

Merced has a pretty packed shooting schedule this year, as she was also in Sony’s freshly released Madame Web and is currently shooting James Gunn’s Superman Legacy as Hawkgirl alongside Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney.
