Apex Legends Kill Code: Part 1 hints at more sapphic drama for Valkyrie and Loba

On Monday, Respawn released the first episode of its new year-long, animated miniseries, Apex Legends Kill Code, which follows Mad Maggie, Loba, and Lifeline as they search for information about Octane’s so-called father, “Eduardo” Silva and his operations on the planet Salvo.

In Apex Legends Kill Code: Part 1, we see the trio hit up a bar on Salvo to try to get information from a bartender. The man, Skudge, isn’t cooperative though, as he hate’s Lifeline’s parents the Ches. Luckily, Maggie is able to use her particular brand of leverage (violence) to get him to start spilling the beans.

They travel to a location Skudge marked for them and break in, finding a strange bunker filled with robots. Lifeline accesses a computer that shows there are multiple of these bunkers across the Outlands, before inserting a drive into the computer to transfer its files over. While she’s busy with that, Loba is on the lookout and investigating the base, and Maggie ends up triggering the alarm when she hits a hanging robot with one of her knives. With this interruption, Lifeline isn’t able to finish the data transfer.

After fighting off the guard robots, our trio manages to escape outside. There, they’re picked up by Valkyrie, who Loba recruited to be their getaway driver beforehand. As they fly away, Maggie and Lifeline discuss the contents of the drive, while Loba looks at a glowing red object she has hidden in her palm as Valkyrie cradles her.

This penultimate scene has larger implications for the world of Apex Legends, as we have to assume it’s something related to Revenant and his source code. With the undead assassin and multiple other factions all vying for this code, anything related to it will have to become important down the road. But it also foreshadows some intense drama between Valkyrie and Loba.

During the “Friends Like These” story arc — in which Vantage travels around the Outlands to meet the other Legends and tell them about a party Mirage is throwing — we see Valkyrie hold a secret meeting with Revenant in a bunker in King’s Canyon. Valkyrie is angry that Revenant and Bangalore have both stuck around after they said they were leaving the Apex Games, and wants to offer the assassin a deal to get him to leave Loba alone permanently. She offers to help Revenant find and destroy his source code in exchange for Loba’s peace of mind. Revenant takes the deal and leaves, only for Valk to get a phone call from Loba letting her know that Jamie — Loba’s close friend who secretly kept Rev’s code — was attacked in Valkyrie’s apartment. Since Revenant was with her when Jamie was attacked, Valkyrie can’t really lay the blame at his feet, but that makes things even more complicated for everyone, especially when the “Friends Like These” epilogue implies that it was another one of the Legends that attacked Jamie.

With all of this in mind, having Loba hiding some kind of seemingly Revenant-related item from Valk while they’re flying seems to imply that she either already has an inkling of what Kairi has been up to, or she will soon. Though Valkyrie seemingly only had the best of intentions when she made her deal with Revenant, Loba will likely only see it as a betrayal, one that may have led to her good friend being hurt. When this comes to the forefront, things are probably going to blow up in a big way between them. This may be the opportunity Bangalore has been waiting for to repair her strained relationship with Loba and finally get things back on track between the two of them, but only time will tell.
