XSET announces 2023 VCT Game Changers roster

On Monday evening, esports organization XSET announced its roster for the 2023 North American VCT Game Changers season. Only one member from last year’s roster remains, with the team signing some heavy-hitters to this year’s iteration.

“We asked ChatGPT how to win the VALORANT Game Changers Championship. It sent us back this video…” the announcement tweet reads.

The XSET Purple 2023 Game Changers roster is as follows:

  • Bob “Bob” Tran (in-game leader)
  • Katja “katsumi” Pfahnl (duelist)
  • Melanie “rise” Tetreault
  • bunnybee
  • panday
  • Daniel “Danimal” Booth (head coach)

This is a fairly star-studded roster, sporting two players from the now-defunct Cloud9 White dynasty in Bob and katsumi. Interestingly, katsumi will be taking on the duelist role for XSET Purple, which is a significant shift from her dominance on controllers. Rise is also an experienced pro coming over from another team, as she competed for CLG Red during the second NA Game Changers series last summer. She will be taking the controller role on this squad. Bunnybee, meanwhile, has been on the XSET Purple squad since October of last year, after coming on as a sub. They and new teammate panday both have histories with popular unsigned squads; bunnybee started out with DartMonkeys, while panday played for both Sanri-O’s and Ariana Grande Perfume after leaving Native Gaming White. These two are set to be flex players for the squad, able to play multiple roles and make game-changing plays in any situation.

The open qualifiers for the 2023 NA VCT Game Changers Series I start on Tuesday, April 4 at ~ 2 p.m. PT. This tournament will use a GSL format, which basically provides participating teams three chances to qualify before they’re eliminated. Any team that manages to take two wins moves forward, while anyone who loses twice drops from the competition. The top-eight teams will advance to the playoff stage, where they’ll compete in a double-elimination bracket to see who can make it to the grand finals and claim the lion’s share of circuit points and prize money.

The new XSET Purple squad will have their sights set on one of these eight playoff spots. Fans will have to tune in later today to see how they manage to perform.
