Can you be gay in The Wreck?
Developers of Bury Me, My Love The Pixel Hunt have released a new 3-D visual novel, The Wreck. It follows a woman named Junon as she tries to face the trauma of her family’s past so that all of them can move forward in the face of another life-changing decision.
The game delves deep into themes of grief, familial trauma, parenting (particularly motherhood), and above all, finding the courage to face yourself and your issues to heal and move forward. It’s not a story for the faint of heart, but for all the pain and sorrow The Wreck depicts, there’s just as much humor, sweetness, and healing to be found within it. But, of course, the most important question remains: Can you be gay?
Can you be gay in The Wreck?
If Junon is queer in any way, she never indicates it during the game. The only partner of hers we ever encounter or hear about is her ex-husband and father of her child, Alex. She also mentions thinking Ryan Reynolds is sexy, but that’s pretty much all we get.
That said, there are queer characters in this game. Junon’s half-sister, Diane, is a lesbian and we experience an entire looping memory sequence about her introducing a previous girlfriend to their family. She joins them for dinner, and we find out more context about why Junon set her kitchen on fire that night. This scene also puts forward the possibility that another member of the family is queer — either that or extremely cruel, maybe both. But we won’t elaborate on that for spoiler reasons. If you’re intrigued, check out our review and see why we gave The Wreck a 4 out of 5. If you want to check the game out for yourself, it’s available now for PC via Steam and GOG, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation.
