Game Dev Fashion Week kicks off February 20

On Monday, game studio Runaway Play announced that this year’s annual Game Dev Fashion Week will start on February 20 and will run through February 26.

Game Dev Fashion Week originally started a few years ago when the team at Runaway Play were discussing the preconceptions and often misconceptions about “what a game developer looks like.” According to Runaway Play, “the idea was simple – we would dress up, take photos and share them on social media to help challenge stereotypes.”

Anyone who views themselves as a game dev is allowed to join in the fashion week festivities, whether that development is your full time gig or just a hobby. All you have to do is take a photo during any day of the week of February 20-26 and share it on the social media of your choosing with the hashtag “#gamedevfashion.” This year’s GDFW will support the Dress for Success charity, which is a global non-profit organization that provides a network of support to women to help them achieve economic independence. Every time someone shares a photo with the #gamedevfashion hashtag and tags @RunawayPlay on social media, the company will donate to Dress for Success.

“We believe it’s important to ‘walk the talk’ – Game Dev Fashion Week is one small (and fun) way that we highlight diversity in the games industry,” Runaway Play wrote about the importance of participating in Game Dev Fashion Week. “Putting a spotlight on the diverse mix of people who are game developers can help others feel more comfortable and welcome – this is important in an industry with a lot of underrepresentation.”

Runaway Play is a mobile game developer and publisher based in Ōtepoti (Dunedin), Aotearoa (New Zealand). “We build games inspired by the natural world, to promote kaitiakitanga (conservation) and māramatanga (awareness) of our natural environment.” They are currently working on Flutter Away, a cozy exploration game set in the Amazon rainforest.
