Can you be gay in Marvel’s Midnight Suns?

We already know that Marvel’s Midnight Suns is always going to be a hit with gay gamers. It has the iconic Scarlet Witch, the beefy Logan aka Wolverine, and you even get the choice to choose your own avatar. We’re thriving, babes.

In Marvel’s Midnight Suns players take on the role of Hunter, an avatar whose gender and clothes you can customize. Hunter is the daughter of the antagonist Lilith, an evil demon who has been resurrected by the organization Hydra in an attempt to take over the world and shape it into their own image. You know, typical bad guy stuff.

Alongside Hunter, players are joined by several different heroes from the Marvel Universe such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Magik. No matter what team you decide to go with, the plot remains the same: kick Lillith’s ass and restore peace to the world. No pressure and all.

But it doesn’t quite answer the question us queer gamers always find ourselves asking whenever we play a video game: is it a bit fruity or, our personal favourite, can you be gay?

Can you be gay in Marvel’s Midnight Suns?

The short answer is: no, you can’t form a romance relationship in Midnight Suns no matter how hard you try. This sucks because as you can see above, Blade is looking mighty tasty.

The long answer is still no, but there’s a bit more complexity to the relationships that you form in this game in comparison to other Marvel games like The Avengers and Guardians of The Galaxy. As explained in a variety of reviews, this game isn’t just a strategic, deck-building game that pushes players from point A to B. In fact what makes Midnight Suns so compelling is that you can also form meaningful connections with your companions and fellow teammates. In fact, Empire’s review stated that the closest companion might be Fire Emblem, a series known for having characters interact with one another to gain support points. So, even if you don’t to smooch Ghost Rider or Magik then it doesn’t really matter, you can still get closer to them as a friend and that’s just as good.

While there is zero romance, Midnight Suns does include some queer characters within its story. The Caretaker, Hunter’s aunt and the one who trained them to get strong enough to oppose their mother, has a lesbian lover in Agatha Harkness. Granted Agatha is dead in this game, but considering the whole resurrection thing this game has going on? It’s not a real impediment.

There’s also the inclusion of Magik, a superhero with a colourful past that looks suspiciously rainbow. Magik was confirmed as pansexual in 2020 during New Mutants #5, but even before then there was always speculation about her romantic and sexual interests. To put it frankly: she’s a bit fruity.

Midnight Suns is available to play now on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
