Atlus won’t revive Yosuke’s gay romance in Persona 4 Revival
Through a series of interviews, it’s been revealed that Yosuke’s gay romance will not be in Persona 4 Revival.
In the original Persona 4 game files, unused dialog was discovered that showed that Yosuke Hanamura was considered to be a romantic option for the protagonist. However, this was scrapped before Persona 4’s release, leaving the protagonist only straight options when it came to romantic options. With the arrival of Person 4 Revival, we had hope that this might be added in to bring the game up to date.
Many games journalists, including Mollie Taylor of PC gamer, sat down with producer Kazuhisa Wada and art director Akane Kabayashi of Persona 4 Revival at Gamescom 2026. During their interviews, it was revealed that Yosuke, the Magician Arcana and first friend of the protagonist, will not be able to be romanced; their direct quote being: “But then we were like, if we do Yosuke we kind of have to do it for all the guys. And if we did all the guys, that would be so much additional content that would be a lot of work. We gotta keep things fair, right? So we ended up being like ‘Ah, this might be a little bit much, so I think we’re gonna have to pass.’”
In an interview with Anime Corner conducted with Kazuhisa Wada and Shigenori Soejima, they asked the developers ‘Have any controversial scenes been re-written because of changed audience expectations of this era?” They answered, through a translator, that: “At Base, we haven’t really changed anything about the story of the characters’ thoughts, or how they act… We are keeping that as is and we’ve just maybe changed the way that we express some of this a little bit, mostly with Yosuke.”
So the way characters go about expressing themselves when it comes to queer adjacent situations will be updated since there is dated language and insensitive content in certain scenes in Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden, but it seems but there will no hints of romance between the protagonist and his male friends.
When building Yosuke’s Social Link, there are options that are romantic in nature, and certainly not interactions one would associate doing with a platonic friend. Additionally, Yosuke often defaults to poking at people when he is uncomfortable with a situation; like in Persona 4 Golden, his poking at Kanj at times is deeply homophobic and cruel.
Kanji is the hot head outcast amongst his peers, but after getting to know him, it is revealed his love for activities that are not stereotypically ‘masculine’ hobbies, which Yosuke often makes fun of him for. In the tent scene in Persona 4 Golden, Yosuke asks “ Are we gonna be safe alone with you?”, alluding to the harmful stereotype of queer people being predators.
Atlus’s history with queer-adjacent scenes, queer baiting and outright homophobic dialogue is long and documented. Persona 4 Revival would have been an amazing opportunity to continue the work to rectify past harm.
Not only is so much being invested in the Persona 4 Revival, but back during the release of Persona 5 Royal we saw the reworking of stereotypical homophobic dialogue and scenes [2022], and similar reworks in Persona 3: Reload. Adding more romance options for the protagonist ‘being too much work”, at best seems like a poor excuse.
Perhaps not all of the male characters have to be romanceable, but starting with one, that initially was supposed to be, is a step in a good direction. Representation being ‘too hard’ to do in 2026, from a games studio like Atlus feels like a cop out. I do hope in Persona 6, we get more options when it comes to romance options and overall queer representation.
Personally, a hope would be asexual/aromantic representation in addition to queer allo relationships too no matter the gender of the protagonist. Additionally, having main a female protagonist again in the series would be simply amazing.
