Apex Legends developer hits back at transphobic gamers
Apex Legends revealed their newest legend Catalyst earlier this month, and already some so-called ‘fans’ are being pretty transphobic about it.
This isn’t too much of a surprise considering there are some Apex Legends players who refuse to believe that Bloodhound, a non-binary hunter who has been in the game since the very beginning, is part of the trans community as well. Despite the constant confirmation from their voice actor, as well as the Apex Legends team.
Because of some of the community’s reaction of misgendering Bloodhound, the team at Respawn kept this in mind when creating Catalyst.
Speaking to The Sun, lead writer Ashley Reed spoke out about why they chose to include Catalyst’s identity up front in the teaser trailer.
“If you’re not upfront about it, people are gonna find ways to deny it.” Reed said. “They’re gonna say, ‘That’s not what you meant.’ We have seen that with some of our other characters who identify a certain way. We’ve seen people say, ‘Oh, no, that’s not what they meant.’ Even when we come out and say, ‘That is what we meant.’”
In the trailer that explores Catalyst’s power and her backstory, the legend outright speaks about her transition and being trans – a first for any of the LGBTQ+ Legends involved in the battle royale game. If Apex Legends wanted to make a statement, then they certainly did with the out-and-proud inclusion of Catalyst.
“We’re surrounded by a bunch of very diverse people in our own lives, so it would only make sense that the future would reflect that, and this cast would reflect that because they’re from all over this future place.” Reed told The Sun. “So it’s kind of inescapable and that if you have a problem with that, Apex isn’t for you.”
Disrespectfully, go cry transphobes because no matter how transphobic you may be, it’s obvious Catalyst is here to stay and slay in Apex Legends for a long time to come.
