Queer game Desta: The Memories Between arrives on Netflix
Desta: The Memories Between is now available to play – exclusively – on mobile via a partnership with the popular-streaming service, Netflix.
Ustwo Games, creators behind games such as Monument Valley and Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, revealed Desta: The Memories Between this June during Summer Game Fest 2022. However a release date was never revealed. Until now, with the game now being available on both iOS and Android platforms.
Following the protagonist Desta (who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns), the game has been described as a ‘character-driven rogue-like’ that combines immersive story-telling with turn-based strategy and tactics. And if that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, the game also looks to throw dodgeball into the mix too.
What we learned about the game during Summer Game Fest is that, after they fall asleep each night, Desta finds themself in an infinite dream world filled with “glowing balls to throw, shattered remnants of locations past, and vague memories.” With the use of these balls, players are able to play games and advance through the flowstate of the dream world, along with taking on enemies and bosses, all while potentially changing the course of events.
Alongside exploring memories, as well as grief and anxiety, the the game will also take the time to touch on gender identity, sexuality, as well as queer friendships and relationships. It hasn’t been confirmed whether there will be anything like Hades’ (a game that served as inspiration for Desta) romance options, but players should still expect queerness within the narrative.
This new game is also Ustwo Games very first to include live-ops supported service – which means more content and meaningful updates will be added to Desta after launch. This includes new abilities, characters, chapters, as well as weekly updated challenge modes; with all new content playable without having to start a new game.
Desta: The Memories Between is available to play on iOS/Android via Netflix. The game will also release on Nintendo Switch and Steam sometime in the coming months.
