Marvel reveals origin story of Web-Weaver – the first-ever gay Spider-Man

Web-Weaver – the very first gay, male Spider-Man – was introduced to fans back in early July through Steve Foxe, the writer of the upcoming comic Edge of Spider-Verse #5. Unfortunately, not much was known about the new web-slinger outside that his comic would release sometime in September 2022.

However, thanks to Marvel sharing a few new preview pages and details, more information about this fierce and feminine Spider-Man has been revealed.

“Web-Weaver, a not-so-mild mannered fashion designer at Van Dyne gets spider-powers and shows us a very different kind of Spider-Slayer in a story by Steve Foxe and Kei Zama. See him strut the runway in front of his fellow Spiders in a variant cover by Kris Anka, the amazing artist behind Web-Weaver’s fabulous design!”

Alongside the variant cover (which can be viewed above), Marvel released a few different previews – with some potentially highlighting what sort of origin story we can expect from Web-Weaver. One image shows the web-slinger running away crying with what we assume to be his parents behind him, their expressions hidden in shadow.

Another shows Web-Weaver pushing Peter Parker out of the way of something in a lab-based setting. In this timeline, is it Web-Weaver who gets the power of web-slinging while Parker lives out an ordinary life? The possibilities are endless!

Previously Web-Weaver’s design came under fire, with some fans criticizing Web-Weaver as being ‘too’ feminine and playing into stereotypical gay stereotypes. However, Foxe made it clear that Web-Weaver isn’t meant to represent every single gay man out there.

“Something I realized immediately when conceiving Web-Weaver is that he can’t–and shouldn’t–represent ALL gay men. No single character can.ā€ Foxe said. ā€œHis fearlessly femme identity is central to who he is, but it’s not the STORY.ā€

Web-Weaver, the first gay, male Spider-Man, will debut in Edge of Spider-Verse #5 on October 5, 2022.
