Guilty Gear Strive devs confirm Bridget’s pronouns in blog post

In the recently released eleventh volume of “Developer’s Backyard” – blog posts where the developers at Arc System Works answer fan questions about Guilty Gear Strive – director Akira Katano and creator Daisuke Ishiwatari made it explicitly clear that the newly-released character Bridget is a woman and that she uses she/her pronouns. Bridget’s story in Arcade Mode already confirmed this through her interactions with other characters, but now the developers have written it in black and white for everyone to see.

The blog post gives a ton of details about Bridget and her background. According to her backstory, Bridget was born in an English village to wealthy parents as one of two twin sons. However, there was a superstition in the village that twin boys would bring misfortune, so the villagers would insist on either killing or exiling the younger twin. Bridget’s parents couldn’t bear either option, so they instead raised their younger child as a girl.

Bridget tried to be happy living as a girl, but this seemed to still cause her parents pain, so she decided to try living as a hyper-masculine, male bounty hunter who made a lot of money to prove that the superstition about twin boys was unfounded. She was able to bring riches back home, which did help put the superstition to rest, but that left Bridget with no reason for her masculinity.

The yo-yo wielding bounty hunter tried to live as a man, but it ultimately didn’t feel right. This leads us to the events of Guilty Gear Strive’s Arcade Mode story. After having exchanges with characters Goldlewis and Ky, Bridget finally faced her truth and accepted herself for who she was as a woman.

“We’ve received many inquiries about Bridget’s gender,” Ishiwatari wrote in the blog post. “After the events of Bridget’s story in Arcade Mode, she self-identifies as a woman. So, as to whether ‘he’ or ‘she’ would be the correct pronoun for Bridget, the answer would be ‘she.'”

Ishiwatari wrapped this section on Bridget’s gender in Guilty Gear Strive with a supportive statement for the character.

“I hope that all of you will watch over her path after her courageous choice to stay true to her own feelings.”
