New PlayStation Plus Premium revealed

It has been rumoured for months that Sony’s answer to the Xbox Game Pass would be unveiled sometime this year, with speculation that the new pass would be called something along the lines of Project Spartacus. The new update to PlayStation Plus isn’t quite that, but if gamers are looking for a new, premium way to play their video games on their PS console, then read on.

Unveiled by Sony’s official blog, Jim Ryan – the President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment – has officially revealed the changes that’ll be coming to PlayStation Plus in June this year. Changes that will see additional games added to the PS Plus service, but one that will see us say goodbye to Sony’s PlayStation Now.

Before the Xbox Game Pass, Sony was seen as ahead of the game with its PS Plus system offering new, refreshing games each month. However, as time as gone on, the cloud streaming provided by PS Now has often paled in comparison to what Microsoft has provided for players both on PC and the Xbox.

Regardless of whether Playstation is openly competing with Game Pass or not, it’s led to a refresh of the PS Plus service. What makes it different is that it now offers 3 different tiers, as listed below.

PlayStation Plus Essential
  • Offers the exact same service as the previous PS Plus, such as: two monthly downloadable games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for saved games, online multiplayer access
