Midnight Mass creator wants to create a Star Wars horror movie

Star Wars and horror is a coupling that has been touched upon in tie-in books and comics, but never in a big feature film. However, Mike Flanagan, the creator behind The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, would like to be the person to change that.

We should be clear that at the moment, it is merely a desire of Flanagan’s to want to create a horror film for Star Wars. In fact, the creator was inspired thanks to being woken up by an earthquake. We’ve heard of weirder things to be inspired by!

“Got woken up by the earthquake this morning, sat there for a few minutes just thinking “I’d really love to make a horror movie in the STAR WARS universe…” The director tweeted.

Flanagan is well known for his thought-provoking psychological horror, with Midnight Mass looking at themes like religion and its impact on people considered ‘other’ to the church. It did incredibly well when it released on Netflix, so we know that Flanagan definitely has the chops to create horror that’ll have us second-guessing everything we know… But will Disney bite?

Even if they do, it looks like Flanagan is pretty busy already. He is currently adapting numerous novels from author Christopher Pike for Netflix in a series called The Midnight Club. He is also adapting Something Is Killing the Children, a comic book series, for Netflix.

Still, we wouldn’t say no to Star Wars taking the plunge into something more unsettling. The series has had its moments – as much as the internet has wanted to make Anakin Skywalker killing younglings a meme, child murder and genocide is still downright awful – but the chance to go deeper into that genre would definitely be refreshing. That and there’s a lot of disturbing stuff happening just revolving around the Jedi and Sith alone. Familiar territory can be plenty horrific.

We don’t know if we’ll ever see Mike Flanagan’s name under a Star Wars title, but considering the significant success of his horror projects, we can still hope for the future…
