Future Star Wars games will allow trans characters

Jedi: Fallen Order may be a Star Wars game that let us down in regards to gender representation, but according to We Got This Covered, future Star Wars games could allow players to create trans and non-binary characters that they relate to.

Star Wars and gender has always been a fickle subject, but strides have been made since the original trilogy and prequel trilogy was released. Back in 2016, author Chuck Wendig released Aftermath: Life Debt and introduced readers to the first explicitly genderqueer character, a pirate by the name of Eleodie Maracavanya. Since her, characters like Star Wars: Squadrons Keo Venzee have been introduced.

The latest non-cis characters revealed by the franchise are two Kotabi Jedi Knights, Terec and Ceret in the Star Wars: The High Republic comic series. They were revealed for International Transgender Day of Visibility in March of 2021 as being trans, non-binary twins. However, how the two of them were represented led to some criticism from fans who felt like they were too much like a ‘bad stereotype.’

However, Star Wars games are looking to take a step forward. As We Got This Covered explains, “future Star Wars games will allow players to create trans heroes in their character creators.” This would be a pretty nice step forward, though we do wonder how this will be portrayed by the game itself. Especially since Cyberpunk 2077 also said players could create trans characters, but severely punished this choice for players by locking pronouns (and romance) to voice type.

That said, if this information does indeed prove to be true then it sounds promising. Outside of games like Saints Row, there have barely been any character creators that’ll let you just be who you want to be, no strings attached. It also just makes sense that a series set in the future, which has literal space magic, shouldn’t be constrained by the ‘just two genders’ rhetoric. There are aliens, space, and so many different cultures that the series has yet to explore that allowing players to play how they want can only be a good thing.

We’re interested to see just what Star Wars game it’ll be to allow players to create trans characters, but until we have more information, all we can do is speculate.

  • As nice as this sounds, before people get their hopes, I want to let people know that We Got This Covered routinely reports stuff with no source besides “trust us” that later turns out not to be true. :C
