Gears of War developer Kate Rayner comes out as trans

Kate Rayner, studio director of The Coalition, the developer behind the Xbox series, Gears of War, has officially come out as trans.

Rayner has worked as the studio director of the popular Microsoft exclusive for almost 6 years, and has worked extensively to make Gears of War the best it can be. For example, she was the one who directed the transition of the Gears of War franchise from Unreal Engine 3 on Xbox 360 to Unreal Engine 4 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It was on Twitter (February 12th) where Rayner announced that she was trans, to a sleuth of support from colleagues like Phil Spencer, as well as numerous fans.

In her post, Rayner stated “there is something personal about me that I want to share with you. This is something that I have been carrying inside for many years and am finally ready to tell you.”

“So, here it is: I am transgender. My gender identity is female.”

The developer of Gears of War, The Coalition, expressed their support for Kate Rayner on their LinkedIn, stating “at The Coalition, we’re made up of a diverse team of people sharing a common vision for making groundbreaking games. We’re proud to support Kate Rayner, our brilliant Technical Director.” They also shared a link for those who were seeking more information on how to be a good ally to the trans people in their lives.

As for Rayner, she acknowledges that the challenges she’s faced getting to a place where she’s most comfortable, but ultimately she is much happier and “optimistic in a way I have not been before.”

That happiness and optimism will continue to shine throughout her work, as Rayner has confirmed she’ll be continuing her work at the Coalition. “I still have that passion and am excited to continue in my role at Microsoft as the studio technical director at The Coalition.”

We would slyly suggest that maybe Gears of War should add a trans flag to its cosmetics, but we don’t actually have to. Why? Because Gears of War already has just that.
