Baldur’s Gate 3 romance will be moving away from the ‘BioWare model’
When you were watching the demo of Baldur’s Gate 3 yesterday, it’s possible that you were thinking ‘will there Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options?’ It’s most certainly a question we were thinking, especially after watching a certain male character casually mention that they seduced another character — who was also male, if you’re curious — in the past.
The answer to that is simple: yes, you’ll be able to experience romance in Baldur’s Gate 3. But if you’re a fan of BioWare games and already have what ‘romance’ will possibly look like in your head, we suggest you rethink that.
Adam Smith, a senior writer at Larian Studios told Vice that Baldur’s Gate 3 is trying to move away from the BioWare model. The BioWare model could mean a variety of things, but we suspect that Larian is referring to older games from BioWare that relied heavily on gifts and a point system. That’s not to say that the romances BioWare do are bad, but it’s interesting to see Larian take a different approach to the subject.
As Smith explained to Vice, “the aim is to have romance develop as a reaction to player choices in the world and building emotional connections. We want it to feel like a natural part of character development rather than something that is ‘earned’ or ‘won’.” He continued, “romance isn’t an achievement, it’s part of a relationship, not a bar that you fill up to progress to the next stage and complete.”
Whether they’ll succeed in making Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options feel organic remains to be seen, but we’re pretty excited all the same.
Baldur’s Gate 3 will have an early access release sometime in 2020 on PC.
