Star Wars LGBT representation is hinted at by JJ Abrams

Star Wars LGBT representation has been far from the best, despite literal years of fans asking to be more included in this sci-fi space opera – and this was even before the wonderful days of the pairing of Finn and Poe. So, it would be an understatement to say that the Star Wars community is desperate for a bone right now.

Most of the hopes for LGBT representation have been resting on Finn and Poe, however thanks to Variety’s interview with Oscar Isaac (Poe), John Boyega (Finn) and director, JJ Abrams, we now know that a romantic relationship between the two leading men isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

If we’re being truthful, this doesn’t seem surprising to us at all due to reasons we have pointed out before – such as Disney being, y’know, Disney – but we can’t deny that we’re disappointed. Despite the baiting being done in interviews about Finn and Poe, it speaks volumes that it won’t be followed through. To quote our very own Gayming Magazine editor, Robin Gray, it seems as though this was a total ‘cocktease.’

Star Wars LGBT representation

But wait, all’s not lost! When talking to JJ Abrams, the director seemed almost coy about LGBT representation in Star Wars. Ironic really, considering even kids cartoons has more diversity in them, but whatever, we’ll judge that later.

According to Variety, Abrams stated that he has always “strived to find a cast for “Star Wars” that “looked more the way the world looks than not. And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film.”

When Variety straight up asked if there would be LGBT representation in The Rise of Skywalker or not, Abrams reply was this: ” I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I just said.”

We’d like to be convinced that means Star Wars LGBT representation isn’t too far away, but we still remember Marvel’s Endgame. Considering Disney is behind both of these franchises, we’re not going to hold our breath just yet.
