If Finn and Poe don’t kiss in The Rise of Skywalker, what’s the point?

The Rise of Skywalker is the end of this new trilogy, where Rey, Finn and Poe will hang up their cape and probably go onto a new adventure as someone else’s background characters. With this ending however, a question springs to mind.

Are Finn and Poe going to kiss by then? If not, what’s the point? While poor Daisy Ridley gets asked about the relationship between Rey and reply guy Kylo Ren for the 50 billionth time, the topic of Finn and Poe’s potential relationship is given a jokey tone each time it’s directed towards John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.

Fans have been clamouring for a Finn and Poe romance since the moment they met in The Force Awakens. The chemistry is there and has been teased, and even with Finn and Rose’ kiss back in The Last Jedi, fans haven’t let that stop them. So then, what will it take for Star Wars to actually get up off their butt, and add in a gay romance?

If we look at Disney’s past sins, particularly the abysmal ‘representation’ of a gay couple in Avengers: Endgame, perhaps that answer isn’t so hard to figure out after all. Of course, J.J Abram’s is a different director from the Russo Brothers, but even the lack of LGBT characters during his time with the series speaks volumes.

Of course the main antagonist of this seems to be Disney itself. While J.J may hope to include LGBT characters in Star Wars, it is ultimately up to the corporation on whether it would ‘fit’ their image of what they want for the sci-fi blockbuster.

There’s also the fact that other countries that aren’t as accepting of LGBT identities, and we all know how much every corporation in this world loves money.

With all that said, I’m still of the opinion that if Star Wars doesn’t introduce a romance that people have been craving for with the same passion, and ferocity, of those who want Rey and Kylo Ren together, then what’s the point of even acknowledging it in the first place?

It’s 2019 and diversity should thrive, especially in a sci-fi setting. So bite the bullet Star Wars and let Finn and Poe kiss.
