Overwatch 2 will have a complete story, says lead writer

When you think of Overwatch, the story doesn’t really jump to the very front of your mind, does it? You could hardly be blamed on that front. Overwatch hasn’t been the greatest with telling a story, despite it being around for years. For some fans, the game and eSports are enough, but the same can’t be said for others who crave to know more about that sweet lore.

However, thanks to an interview PlayStation Blog had with lead writer, Michael Chu, doubts about Overwatch 2 also failing in the story department may actually be for nothing.

“[Overwatch 2] will have a complete story with beginning, middle, and end,” Chu said. “In addition, we’ve finally moved the story forward after Winston’s recall, and we hope to continue to push events into the future in the stories to come.”

During the interview with PlayStation Blog, Chu talked about how, in a way, the Archives PvE was used to ‘experiment’ with story content. We can’t exactly deny that Blizzard does try and provide at least some story with these events, however it often feels like breadcrumbs. If this is changing for Overwatch 2, to make the story feel more nuanced and pronounced, then we can’t say we aren’t a little excited about that.

That said, Chu also made it clear that these new story-based missions wouldn’t exactly be ‘single-player’.

“We’d like to call the story a Story Experience,” he said. “It’s not quite a single-player campaign in that you will be playing the story alongside three other players in co-op. Players will experience the story together with their friends.”

We pretty much already knew this, as, like the Archive events, you’re unable to progress through without a team. Nonetheless, we’re eager to see how Overwatch 2’s story will play out.
