Old Fire Emblem ROM Hack becomes its own game

ROM Hacks have always been popular online, despite the various attempts of PR, franchises, etc trying their very best to stop it. For this Fire Emblem ROM hack, which was originally called Midnight Sun, it was a cancellation back in 2017 that ultimately stopped it from reaching fruition.

Thanks to Kotaku, who originally reported this story, we now know that the previously canceled game has now found a new life. Described as a ‘dark fantasy jRPG-VN’, it’s already looking like a far more different game than it was previously, which adhered to Fire Emblem’s more strategic gameplay.

It also seems more narrative-heavy, with the game’s Kickstarter describing the game as having a blend of “immersive narrative with interesting and challenging turn-based tactical gameplay.”

As for the story, you’ll be following a group of morally ambiguous individuals as they embark on a quest across the lands of Arvium. The main character, Faratras Hoikade, is a princess that has the soul of a Demon King inside of her and does everything within her power to keep it that way. Unfortunately, her enemies aren’t in agreement about that.

It isn’t just Faratras that you’ll see though, you’ll also be joined by her companions who all have their own burdens to bear. The game goes to show this ‘burden’ by including ‘sanity’. While the name sounds a little off-putting, but sanity has a use in this game.

As Kickstarter describes, “every character’s mental state – or “Sanity” – will affect not only their interactions with others, but also their battle proficiency. And that’s due to how magic works in the world of Arvium.”

It sounds fun, and with combat being turn-based, it’ll allow players to think about their decisions before deciding anything that could cost both sanity and mana points.

As previously stated, the game is on Kickstarter at the moment and is currently waiting to be funded. If you’d like to support Path of the Midnight Sun, then you can do so here.
