Gimme gimme more Britney Spears games

She’s one of the best selling pop acts of all time and a 2004 Grammy Award winner. Her legacy is fueled by infectious beats, a bubbly personality and dance breaks that had us all jumping out of our seats. Recently, however, Britney Spears has been caught up in a whirlwind of tabloid rumors, so much so that she was forced to cancel her second Las Vegas residency Domination. I still spend a lot of time listening to her iconic hits, but in a time where her personal life is going up in flames, I want to remind all of the gaymers out there that not only did she define our lives with timeless tunes – she also gave us a video game!

Britney’s Dance Beat was released by developer/publisher THQ to Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2 and PC in mid-late 2002. Partially inspired by the success of Dance Dance Revolution, Britney’s Dance Beat saw players vying for a spot in her group of tour background dancers. To do this, you needed to pass a series of “auditions” that forced you to press buttons and symbols in tune with the music on your screen. If you passed auditions and conquered the trials of “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” “Stronger,” “Overprotected” and “I’m a Slave 4 U,” you could globe-trot with The Princess of Pop.

Completing levels also rewarded you with “backstage passes” that unlocked behind-the-scenes videos and photo-shoots. Which, honestly, I’d love to see in 2019 as many of those gems are probably lost to the clutches of time. The game looks pretty cringeworthy – if not for the late 1990’s/early 2000’s fashion trends – and I don’t think that’s even Britney Spears’ voice narrating the game.

The success of Britney’s Dance Beat (what?) would later spur the release of a mobile app game, Britney’s American Dream, which sold over 550,00 downloads in 2016.

Here’s hoping Godney makes another triumphant comeback while also maintaining her happiness. #FreeBritney
