Emma Corrin is a they/them out to create may/hem in new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer
The latest trailer for the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine, dropped yesterday and we got our first look at the super villain Cassandra Nova, played by non-binary actor Emma Corrin.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the third outing for Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and the first under the stewardship of Disney, but that is not stopping them making the first official Marvel R-rated movie. The trailer is jam packed with the expected level of chaos, bloodshed, swearing and crude humor that we’ve come to expect from the ‘Merc with a Mouth’.
This new trailer gives us the first major appearance of Cassandra Nova played by actor Emma Corrin, last seen as Diana Princess of Wales in Netflix’s The Crown.
Cassandra Nova began life at the same time as Charles Xavier. Conceived without a body, Cassandra improvised one by copying Xavier’s DNA to make her own body, effectively becoming his twin sister. She grew with her brother until the time when Charles sensed her monstrous thoughts. Charles attempted to kill the creature in the womb, resulting in its physical body being stillborn.
Just like in comic books, the creature didn’t die. Instead, it survived by sticking to a sewer wall as just a tiny bit of living matter. Over many years, it slowly rebuilt its body and got better at acting like a human. During this time, the creature started to believe that the world it was living in was the same place where it had fought Charles before. It thought that everything around was only an illusion except for itself and Charles. The creature felt that its mission was to destroy everything that Charles cared about – his hopes, dreams and his team of X-Men.
While the storyline surrounding Cassandra in the movie remains a secret, we’re excited to see this play out as she is a formidable foe that has considerable mental and telekinetic strength.
Emma Corrin’s star has been on the rise for the last few years with major roles in The Crown, My Policeman with Harry Styles, and on stage in the title role of Orlando. Corrin came out as queer in 2021 and in July 2022 added they/them pronouns to their Instagram account.
She later discussed identifying as non-binary in an interview with the The New York Times. “My identity and being nonbinary is an embrace of many different parts of myself, the masculine and the feminine and everything in between. It’s hard to be discovering something in yourself at the same time [as] you’re navigating an industry that demands a lot of you, in terms of knowing who you are.”
