Umbrella Academy returns for final season this August
In celebration of its original debut on Netflix globally on February 15, 2019, the streaming platform announced that the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy will release on August 8, 2024.
The show is an adaptation of Gerard Way’s (also the lead singer of My Chemical Romance) comic book series of the same name. It follows seven children who were all born from an event where 43 women across the world simultaneously gave birth, despite not showing any signs of pregnancy before the labor started. These seven were adopted by a billionaire who formed them into his own personal superhero team called The Umbrella Academy.
When their adopted father dies, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Ben, Five, and Vanya all reunite to attend his funeral, though they are all very different now. Five attends via time travel, arriving from the future to warn their siblings that an apocalypse is on the horizon. To stop this, the siblings begin investigating their father’s death while trying to find a solution to the end of the world.
During the show’s third season, Vanya (played by Elliot Page) comes out as a transgender man and changes his name to Viktor. This change coincided with Page’s real-life transition in 2020, and was a fairly grounded and simple handling of the situation. Viktor has some time for introspection and decides to act upon his feelings, and his siblings accept the news and move on without fanfare.
According to the cast in a promotional video this is set to be “the best season yet.”
Page said that fans should expect “excitement, surprises, humor,” and “twists, turns, action, of course.”
“There’s some unbelievable new characters and new villains that are super exciting,” said Emmy Raver-Lampman, who plays Allison Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy.
“I feel personally that this is my favorite season,” David Castañeda (Diego Hargreeves) added.
Fans will be able to stream the final season of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix starting August 8, 2024.
