Of Sense and Soul is an upcoming queer Victorian romance game

Of Sense and Soul is an upcoming “soft, slow-burn, Victorian romance game” from Hong Kong-based developer Forsythia Productions. It is the studio’s debut video game project, and will be available on PC, Mac, and Linus when it releases. The game is about to head to Kickstarter to start fundraising to cover development costs.

According to the description on its Kickstarter pre-launch page, Of Sense and Soul is “a soft, slow burn LGBT+ historical romance visual novel about personal growth and belonging in 1870s London.” It follows an editorialist named Hugo Brooks and a gentleman named Seamus Charkham who live in London and have an odd chance encounter thanks to a misconstrued personal ad. Their lives intertwine from here, and the two must struggle against their habits, and the expectations of society to determine if they will ultimately follow their hearts, or the status quo. Both men are extremely set in their ways, and in desperate need of a change of pace — though both would also hate to actually admit that.

The team currently plan to have two playable routes — one for each protagonist — along with watercolor-inspired visuals, 100,000+ words across three acts, an original soundtrack, partial voice acting, multiple accessibility options, and “lot of gay pining and introspection.”

Of Sense and Soul will launch on Kickstarter sometime in July of this year. The pre-launch page is up now, so anyone who is interested in updates can choose to be notified when the campaign launches. There is also an extended demo of the game available on both Steam and itch.io for interested players to check out. This demo includes all of the game’s first act, which has 15,000+ words that amount to an estimated one to one and half hours of gameplay. It also includes content from both of the story’s playable routes.
