Annie and the AI launches May 23

On Wednesday, developer NoSleepGames announced that its upcoming existential puzzle game, Annie and the AI will release on May 23. The voice actor who portrays Steph Gingrich in the Life is Strange series, Katy Bentz, is attached to the project as the voice of main character Annie.

In Annie and the AI, players assume the role of Esme, an artificial intelligence program created by the “brilliant but troubled” Annie (played by Bentz). Annie is a shut-in developer living in the late 2020’s who spends most of her time working on personal projects and dealing with family issues. In order to grow and develop, Esme must solve puzzles within the landscape of her mind. Doing this spurs the AI to start to question the world they now exist in, and eventually their focus begins to shift towards Annie and her true motivations for creating Esme. Players get to interact with both characters via in-depth conversations between them, and the puzzles Esme needs to solve.

This narrative-driven, puzzle game is focused on examining how human an AI can actually be, and if one can potentially possess a soul. Annie tries to guide her creation, while also navigating her own questions about love, family, and humanity.

“It’s so exciting to be approaching our release date at last,” said NoSleepGames founder Jonny Fawkes in a press release. “The team has worked so hard to create this beautiful story which is so full of meaningful themes. Now comes the fun part where we get to share it with all of you. I hope you will fall in love with Annie and Esme just as we have.”

Annie and the AI is coming to PC via Steam on May 23 and will sell for $8.99. If you’re interested, the game is already available to wishlist on Steam.
