Small Town Emo is a gay Gameboy game
If someone had told us they’d be releasing a gay game for the Gameboy platform, we’d have been very skeptical. But that is indeed what Fnife Games have done with Small Town Emo.
Developed in GBStudio, Small Town Emo follows Ken; a teen who just so happens to have a big gay crush on his best friend, Fergus. Considering the game is set in 2007 in a small-town setting, Ken obviously has some very real and valid feelings about telling his best friend that he is in love with him.
At the beginning of Small Town Emo it is established that Ken has been avoiding Fergus for some time. However, Ken is suddenly invited to a Halloween party after speaking to his best friend on MSN and lying about having a crush on a girl in his maths class. Fergus will be there, and it seems a shame not to go, right?
Players will follow Ken as he goes throughout the day leading up to the Halloween party. Whether he’ll confess to Fergus or not remains a mystery, as the game is currently only available as a demo.
The demo takes about an hour to complete, with most of the action being through walking and talking. Nevertheless, there are mini-games for players, such as pimple popper and something which the developers have described as ‘bullet hell’. Interesting.

While Small Town Emo can be played on your Gameboy – you just need to load the ROM onto a flash cart to play it on a physical device – players can also gain access to the game via its page on itch.io.
