The Last of Us Part II will take more than one season of the HBO show
In an interview with GQ, co-creators of The Last of Us HBO adaptation Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirmed that the show’s version of the events of The Last of Us Part II will take place over more than one season. The creators would not confirm exactly how many seasons they plan to use to tell this part of the story, just that it will be more than one.
“You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct,” Mazin told GQ.
This isn’t exactly surprising, as Part II is a significantly longer experience than its predecessor and covers a lot more thematic and narrative ground. Since the game essentially has two fully fledged storylines with two unique characters, it makes sense that the TV adaptation would have to take more time to present them with its limited episode counts.
So far, it seems like Druckmann has taken the opportunity the adaptation presented to change or elaborate on certain storylines that were more in the background of the first game. This includes the gay love story between Bill and Frank, as well as Joel’s overall character arc as a father/protector/selfish bastard in the show’s recently aired finale. It looks like this approach will continue in the following seasons.
“Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in Part 2] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” Druckmann told GQ. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”
“There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical,” Mazin said. “There are things that are going to be added and enriched. There are some things that are going to be flipped. Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy.”
