Bella Ramsay is excited for future lesbian relationship in The Last of Us TV series

HBO Max’s The Last of Us caused quite the stir with its previous episode following the loving relationship between Bill and Frank, and by stir we mean it made us cry, weep and cry some more. But like us, Bella Ramsay (Ellie) is looking ahead and is eager to dive right into the lesbian relationship depicted in the game’s sequel.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Bella Ramsay explained that they were excited to see the lesbian relationship between Ellie and Dina unfold. “I’m really excited, to be honest, for the Ellie/ Dina story.” They continued. “I’ve watched a cut together, someone’s made a phenomenal – I don’t know how they do it – like an amazing edit of just the gameplay, like Ellie and Dina’s love story. So I’m excited to play that out.”

Ellie was confirmed as a lesbian in the 2014 The Last of Us DLC, Left Behind. After convincing her friend Riley to not run away and join up the Fireflies, Ellie kisses her friend who responds positively. Originally the team over at Naughty Dog wanted to see whether the scene between Riley and Ellie fit without the kiss, but found that the scene – and Ellie and Riley’s characters – were much better off with it included.

In The Last of Us 2, Ellie’s relationship with new character Dina was one of the most heartfelt inclusions that resonated with both queer gamers and allies. Much like her relationship with Joel, Dina’s love is the fuel that helps push Ellie’s journey in the game’s sequel, and it makes sense why Ramsay would be excited to explore it in the second season of The Last of Us.
