Night in the Woods gets surprise PS5 upgrade

On Tuesday, indie publisher Finji announced that both apocalyptic survival strategy game Overland and narrative cult classic Night in the Woods are available natively on PlayStation 5, and players who own the PS4 versions of these games will get the upgraded versions for free.

It is important to note that saves will not carry over between versions, so if you are in the middle of either game on the PS4, your progress will not follow you if you decide to play on the PS5 instead. You will have to start fresh if you decide to play on your next gen console. Finji also confirmed that development of a physical version of Night in the Woods is still in the works with Limited Run.

For those who haven’t gotten around to trying out this absolute banger, Night in the Woods is a narrative adventure game with platforming elements that follows Mae, a twenty-year old cat girl who has just come back to her small hometown of Possum Springs after dropping out of university. On top of trying to figure out why exactly Mae left school — which is largely shrouded in a slowly unravelling mystery — we also have to help her navigate her relationships with the people she left behind, and the fact that their lives have gone on without her. Plus, there’s some creepy stuff happening around town as well, like severed arms lying in the street and Mae’s old classmate going missing.

This game is a cult classic because it combines heartfelt, real interactions and relationships with relatable dialogue and interesting characters, all wrapped up in a spooky and compelling mystery. It touches on topics of queerness, living in a small town, what the death of industry does to these small towns, mental health, and more. Now players can experience all of this in 4K at 60 fps.
